BEST OF 2016

2016 is ended, now it's time for 2017.

2016 is ended, now it's time for 2017. Each year is usually the time for us to reflect, look back at the things that happen throughout the year, and took lessons for next year.

If 2015 is a great year, I gotta say than 2016 is really really great, it's an awesome year for me! I got plenty great opportunities to visit interesting places and to experience things I've never imagine before, so even though it's really hard to say which one is the best, here are my best of 2016

SWIMMING WITH WHALE SHARKS

It's definitely one of the best moments in 2016. Despite the name "whale", this gentle creature is fish, they're actually sharks but get a "whale" name because of the size. Also, don't worry since they only eat planktons, small fishes and shrimps, human is surely not on the menu.

It's definitely one of the best moments in 2016. We swim and see the whale sharks directly in front of the eyes when swimming beach Botubarani, Gorontalo. Despite the name "whale", this gentle creature is fish, they're actually sharks but get a "whale" name because of the size. Also, do not worry since they only eat planktons, small fishes and shrimps, human is surely not on the menu.

One thing to remember, even though they're so gentle and cute, never touch them in purpose, you could harm them and yourself. Respect, and the nature will be kind to us

PERFECT DAY WITH MANTA RAYS

This is not the first time I was confronted with manta rays, but in August 2016, we felt that the day is absolutely perfect. That afternoon the weather was very sunny in the Komodo National Park, Flores, sea water was very calm, crystal clear sea, and more than six mantas kept passing and circling around us, such an amazing feeling!

AMAZING SKY DIVE

Surprisingly, sky dive is not as scary as bungy, I was so calm and relax, even before the jump. After the jump? it's all good feeling! :)

INTO THE AFRICAN SAFARIS

Got a really nice experience feeling the African Safari on my early 2016. Also, my best experience is the cheetah walk on our Zambia visit.

Trip to South Africa in 2016 was filled with days touring at Kruger National Park, saw the lion nap, elephant flashed and enjoy the beautiful sunset in the middle of the safari. MISOOL, AGAIN! -- WILL ALWAYS BE MY BEST EVERY YEAR

No more words can describe, Misool is just breath-taking, take a look for yourself

WINTER WONDERLAND SHIRAKAWA-GO

On 2015 I visit Shirakawa-go during summer, and I remember my words "I'm so gonna visit this place again during winter," and I did on 2016.

Houses with triangular roofs are covered with a layer of white snow, and the hills are covered with snow, truly a winter wonderland!

CONTINUOUS JAPAN TRIP

Feels like Japan is always calling on 2016! I went to Japan several times, even plan my own trip with friends and family to Japan. From Nagoya, another Tokyo trip, Miyagi, Kofu. Okinawa until Hokkaido, so many fun experience in Japan!

PERFECT KOMODO SCUBA TRIP

My all time favorite scuba dive spot is Komodo. Komodo, I'll come again this 2017, it's a promise!

HOW TO: SWIM WITH THE WHALE SHARKS (and get good photos!)

Since the photos of tourists swimming with the gentle giant, the whale sharks, spreaded on the Internet, Botubarani village in Gorontalo has almost never been empty. During the weekdays' afternoons or at the peak of weekend, the waters of the village which is just 40 minutes' drive from the center of Gorontalo city is always full of people who want to enjoy the thrill of swimming with the creatures which are up to more than a meter in length.

Unfortunately, this enthusiasm is not followed by a basic knowledge of the rules of interacting with the whale sharks, as a result many people uploaded photos in which they touch these gentle giants, pulling their fins, and also stepping even sitting on this biggest shark in the world.

Not only it could make people to hurt themselves and hurt the whale sharks, the wrong way to interact could also make people getting bullied in social media, the intention to look cool could only make them stressed because of getting various insults and angry comments from netizens.

SO HOW TO INTERACT WITH WHALE SHARKS?

It's simple, keep your hands off, keep you feet off them. IT IS NOT GOOD, meski kulit whale shark tebal, tetap saja kita dapat melukai mereka, dan sebaliknya.

It's simple, keep your hands off, keep your feet off them. Do not touch, do not pull their fins (yes, I see some people post photos in which they look proud pulling the whale shark's dorsal fin). IT IS NOT GOOD, although the whale shark's skin is actually thick, we still can hurt them, and vice versa. When they feel uncomfortable it is too risky since we could get hurt because of the sudden movement of the large whale shark.

BUT I WANT TO GET GOOD PHOTOS

It's pretty easy to get stunning photos with a creature so big (all whale shark photos always interesting), siapkan kamera dengan lensa super wide (action cam mostly kameranya fish eye alias super wide), gantian minta teman saling memfoto, jangan terlalu dekat juga nanti keseluruhan figur whale shark ini tidak muncul di frame.

It's pretty easy to get stunning photos with a creature that is so big (all whale shark photos are always interesting), set up the camera with super wide lens super (action cam mostly camera since their lens are fish eye aka super wide), take turns with friends to take photos of each other, do not get too close too or the overall figure of whale shark will not appear in the frame.

Take a lot of pictures, jangan takut ambil gambar, toh sekarang udah jaman digital, file-file yang blur, tidak bagus dll bisa dihapus belakangan.

Take a lot of pictures, do not be afraid to take a picture, since now is already the digital era, if you find blur files, you could always delete them later.

BUT I CANNOT SWIM PROPERLY

Use lifejacket, or use a snorkel, while continuing to swim in a horizontal position only. Not only it is comfortable, taking photos with ordinary swimming position is pretty good.

Another shot: ngambang biasa aja, kalau ada whale shark di sekeliling kita, otomatis it's gonna be good good photos, ga usah mikir kita mesti keliatan keren, mau sekeren apapun gaya kita, whale sharknya tetap jadi fokus utama di foto kok hehe.

Another shot: just floats normally, if there are whale sharks around us, it's automatically gonna be a good good photos, don't think that we must look cool, whatever our style is in the photos, whale shark will still become the major focus in the picture anyway haha!

I CAN DUCK DIVE!

Then, it's good, so you can swim with them below.

Then, it's good, so you can swim with them below. Remember to be aware of the depth while pursuing whale shark, if you swim too deep and not realizing it, you could run out of your breath hehe.

Remember to stay calm, not too chaotic so we could swim calmly on their side, the upper side is better because sometimes the whale sharks turned to the right and left, so that the possibility of getting hit by the gentle giants is less.

Jika menggunakan selfie stick, ingat untuk tidak mengenai whale shark ya, they're big so it's hard to get full selfie shot with them kalau terlalu dekat, lebih baik atur jarak, crop foto bisa belakangan kan :)

If using selfie stick, remember to not let it touch whale shark, they're big so it's hard to get a full shot selfie with them if it's too close, it is better to set the distance, you can always crop the photos later :)

REMEMBER TO STOP TAKING PHOTOS, AND JUST ENJOY

It's a magical feeling for sure!
The sensasion of swimming with sharks so big, yet so gentle is UH-MAZING, jangan terlalu terbuai heboh foto-foto terus dan yang kita lihat dari awal sampai akhir hanyalah LCD kamera, you're missing the point.. nikmati sensasi saat whale shark mendekat seakan tidak perduli kita ada di dekatnya, jika bisa freedive, go swimming with them, perhatikan pola bintik-bintik di badannya yang sangat menarik, lihat dorsal fin besarnya, perhatikan beberapa bekas luka yang berbeda di setiap whale shark, then we starting to recoqnize one by one, it's totally amazing!

The sensasion of swimming with sharks which are so big, yet so gentle is UH-MAZING, do not be lulled into a taking photographs all the time that the only thing you see from start to finish is just camera's LCD, you're missing the point .. enjoy the sensation when the whale shark is approaching as if it doesn't care that we are nearby, if you can freedive, go swimming with them, take a closer look at the pattern of spots on its body that is very interesting, look how big the dorsal fin is, pay attention at the distinctive scar on each whale shark, then we start to recoqnize them one by one, it's totally amazing!

RESPECT
Nature is always bigger than you, stronger than you. Jangan merasa besar (kepala), they might be gentle but they're not pets. Put respect on them, and nature will be kind to you

SWIMMING WITH THE GENTLE GIANTS: WHALE SHARK GORONTALO

Whale shark Gorontalo

Just less than 40 minutes by car from the city center of Gorontalo, I and my friends had arrived in the village of Bolango Botubarani in Bone regency, Gorontalo.

Di satu tenda terpal kecil, terdapat spanduk mengenai wisata hiu paus, the-famous whale shark, the biggest fish in the world!

In a small tarp tent, there is a banner on a whale shark tour, the-famous whale shark, the biggest fish in the world!

We prepare with snorkeling equipment and cameras, then climbed into a rubber boat without an engine. Only driven by paddle, it was not until five minutes the ship had stopped. I saw a line of rope and buoys in waters near the coast is still far away.

"Here? This is really close (to the coast)," I said

Guide kami selama perjalanan, Feri, langsung memukul-mukul permukaan air, membuat suara-suara tepisan air.

Our guide for the trip, Feri, immediately hits the surface of the water, making noises of ward water. While the man who brought the boat also banging the bottom of inflatable boat with the paddles.

Shortly the dark and great figure looks closer. The weather was cloudy so visibility in the water was not so good. The figure approached closer to the boat, white spots on his body began to be seen, whale shark !!

Whale shark Gorontalo

All of us in the boat suddenly became excited when the whale shark directly approached the ship and opened her mouth, asking for a meal. One large plastic bag containing the head and shrimps' shells have been prepared, the clerk immediately fed slowly (and instantly sucked up immediately by a whale shark).
"OK See you underwater!" tanpa menunggu saya langsung memakai fin dan terjun ke air. Feri kemudian memukul-mukul permukaan air lagi, memanggil si gentle giant.

"OK See you underwater!" without waiting I start using fin and plunged into the water. I swam closer to the whale shark but he seems to have gone on the side of the boat. Feri then hit the surface again, called the gentle giant.

There's such tremendous feeling when this totally big creature, bigger than cars, swimming right to you!

I looked down at the water surface. Overcast and drizzle make the water more turbid than usual. Suddenly I saw a big shadow, the whale sharks come closer to me! There's such tremendous feeling when this totally big creature, bigger than cars, swimming right to you!

While taking pictures, I noticed the whale shark is approaching, I thought he would escape when seeing me, but it did not. When he was in the position less than two meters in front of me, I dodge, I certainly do not want to get his by fish the size of a bus haha!

Because in my brain already embedded information that even it is large, whale sharks only eat plankton, small fish and shrimp, then I'm glad when the whale shark is approaching, and while on the side or face to face with the whale sharks, even when one of the gentle giant's suddenly opened her mouth wide when in front of me.

"Yang besar namanya Bima," ujar bapak yang saya lupa namanya (maaf ya pak, saya terlalu excited melihat whale shark sampai lupa dengan manusia haha)

"The bigger one's name is Bima," said the man that I forgot his name (sorry yes sir, I'm too excited about seeing whale shark so I forgot the man haha)

The whale shark is continuously approaching the boat, then stayed away, came closer, then stayed away. In total there are five whale sharks "stopped off" when our boat comes to feeding time. The size of the whale shark approaching us are diverse, ranging from 5 to 7 meters. After a while we begin to "know" the whale shark is one by one.

"It's called Sherli," when the whale shark approaching. He has scars near her mouth area.

"Kasian Sherli"
"Get well soon ya Sherli"
"Sherli udah bikin BPJS?"

"Poor Sherli"
"Get well soon dear Sherli"
"Sherli did you have BPJS?" (ps: health insurance)

We joked while watching Sherli, the-whale-shark who was more than 4 minutes continuously open mouth near the boat, ask for food like the tame pet dogs.

Meski tampak jinak, whale shark tetap binatang liar.

Although seem tame, the whale shark remains a wild animal. When Village Botubarani "discovered" as an area stopover whale sharks, the location was right "booming," residents of Gorontalo and tourists outside the region flocked to take pictures with whale sharks, without rules so it was chaotic, photos of people touching the whale sharks, or even sitting on a whale shark easily found on social media. The whale shark began to have wounds on his body, as a result of being kicked, trampled and exposed by propeller of boat engines.

Luckily it did not take long until environmentalists discussed with the government, and made rules to keep this area, and of course protect the existing whale sharks. Now all the boats in the zone (area) feeding whale shark, the number of ships and passengers in it was arranged. Visitors also should not touch a whale shark on purpose (well, sometimes whale shark flashed quickly and "touch" us, it's ok).

Up to now there are 17 male whale sharks, (yes) even though one of them is named Sherli :)) who continually aome to the waters Botubarani village. These whale sharks are still immature, with three sizes of up to 7 meters. Usually there are times where the sharks whales around looking for food, but since there is the business of processing shrimp, whale sharks approached the village Botubarani for water used for processing shrimp containing the essence of the shells that flow into the sea fishing interest the whale sharks, then fishermen and residents begin to "feed" the remnants of shrimp processing.

Selfie attempt with the whale sharks, they don't seem to care anyway LOL
Maybe someday these gentle giant have to migrate again, biasanya ada satu musim migrasi hiu paus. Hopefully we didn't change their migrate cycle, and hopefully after migrating, they will remember to come back again to Desa Botubarani :)

@marischkaprue - she's just a small creature in this big big world :)
