Snorkeling Tanpa ke Laut

Saya selalu meracuni siapapun yang saya temui untuk menyelam, mencoba menikmati keindahan laut yang biru dan beragam keindahan makhluk laut yang ada di dalamnya.

I always persuade anyone I met to start diving, to enjoy the beauty of the blue sea and the diversity of sea creatures on it.

Diving memang bukan perkara mudah, anda perlu belajar terlebih dahulu, mengenal alat untuk mengakomodir olah raga ini, serta mendapatkan sertifikasi untuk dapat menyelam di berbagai lokasi penyelaman. Selain itu, diving dipandang cukup mahal selain karena memerlukan berbagai perangkat, sewa kapal dan bahkan tiket menuju lokasi penyelaman yang cukup jauh dari ibukota Jakarta di Indonesia.

Diving is not easy, you need to learn first, making yourself familiar with the gears to accommodate this water sports and also getting diving license to be able to dive in various diving spots.t dive sites. Beside that, diving is also considered as an expensive sports since it requires gears, boat rental and even plane tickets to get into great dive sites which is quite far from Jakarta in Indonesia.

Snorkeling is so easy!

Cara pertama membuat seseorang cinta laut adalah dengan melihat keindahannya, menikmati beragamnya warna di lautan dan paling mudah adalah dengan snorkeling karena anda tidak perlu bisa berenang, anda tidak perlu dapat menahan napas, anda tidak perlu mengeluarkan banyak tenaga. Cukup memakai masker, snorkel dan fin maka tinggal membenamkan muka ke dalam air, bernapas melalui snorkel sambil menikmati keindahan ragam koral dan satwa laut yang berada dekat dengan permukaan.

The first way of making someone love the sea is by let them see how beautiful it is, by letting them witness how rich the colors in the ocean and the easiest way is by snorkeling since you don't have to be able to swim or holding your breath and also it doesn't require a lot of energy. Just wear the mask, snorkel and fins, let your face burrowed down in the water, breath through the snorkel and enjoy the beauty of corals and fishes near the surface.

Namun rupanya keindahan yang tadinya mesti didapatkan hanya di laut kini dapat dinikmati di daratan. Ya, saya sebut daratan karena sensasi snorkeling disini tidak perlu pergi ke laut meski terletak di area pesisir pantai.

But apparently the beauty which must be obtained only at the sea can now be enjoyed without going to the sea. Yes, the sensation of snorkeling here isn't something you must go to the sea first, though it is still located in the coastal area.

Di Adventure Cove Waterpark, Sentosa, Singapura, ada satu sensasi snorkeling buatan. Kenapa saya sebut buatan? karena kolam luas penuh ikan ini sepenuhnya buatan manusia, meski ikan ikan di dalamnya yang berwarna warni ini tentunya asli. Beragam koral buatan ditanam di kolam Rainbow Reef, lengkap dengan ikan ikan yang biasanya anda temui saat snorkeling yaitu damselfish, anthias hingga angelfish yang berwarna warni.

 
At Adventure Cove Waterpark, Sentosa Island, Singapore, you can feel the sensation of some kind of "artificial" snorkeling. Why do I called that artificial? since the pond full of fish is entirely man-made, although the fishes is of course real. Variety of man made hard corals are planted inside the pond, complete with fishes you usually see when snorkeling at the sea such as damselfishes, anthias and also angelfishes.

Can you believe this is all man-made?

Kolam Rainbow Reef dibuat lebih tinggi dari lantai dan di sebagian sisi terdapat kaca untuk melihat isi kolam yang penuh dengan ikan laut berwarna warni. Bagi keluarga dengan anak kecil, ini adalah tempat ideal untuk pengenalan satwa laut dan semacam simulasi untuk snorkeling yang sesungguhnya di laut kemudian hari.

This Rainbow Reef pond is protrudes, higher than the floor and at some side of the pond you can see rectangle glass to see inside the pond which is filled with colorful fishes. For families with young children, this is an ideal place to introduce some marine fish and also some kind of simulation for the real snorkeling in the sea later.

Sayangnya Rainbow Reef ini sangat menarik bagi pengunjung Adventure Cove Waterpark, yang berarti saya harus mengantre untuk menikmati satu keliling mengitari kolam. Jika mau lebih puas, rasanya mesti minimal mengitari kolam ini dua putaran, jadi cobalah untuk datang tidak di masa puncak liburan atau weekend jadi anda bisa menikmati snorkeling mudah dengan maksimal.

Unfortunately this Rainbow Reef is very attractive to visitors, which meant that I had to queue first before enjoying one laps around this pond. I think to be satisfied, you must try at least two laps around the pond, so if you have options, try not to come during holiday peak or weekend so you can enjoy this place even more.

Parang Ireng Beach, Simply Beautiful!

Ada lokasi lokasi yang tidak tercatat dalam itinerary namun ternyata membuat anda menggeser apa yang tercatat di jadwal perjalanan. Lupakan rencana saat menemukan keindahan di sela kaki melangkah. Hal yang sama terjadi disini, di Pantai Parang Ireng.

Sometimes, the locations which wasn't in the itinerary in fact are those makes you wanna stay and forgot your previous schedule plan. When you found beauty during your footsteps when traveling, don't mind the itinerary. Same thing happen here in Parang Ireng Beach.

G-Land atau Plengkung terkenal sebagai lokasi olah raga selancar yang sangat fantastis. Namun di area ini masih banyak keindahan yang memanggil siapapun, surfer ataupun bukan akan dibuai oleh pemandangan indah yang terdapat di Taman Nasional Alas Purwo, Banyuwangi, Jawa Timur.

G - Land or Plengkung is famous as the ultimate surfing spot. But here in Alas Purwo National Park, there are more beauties calling everyone to come, surfer or not, will be blown away by the scenery here in the national park which located in Banyuwangi, East Java.

Terletak hanya 15 menit perjalanan dari Pantai Plengkung, Pantai Parang Ireng merupakan salah satu pantai favorit saya di Taman Nasional Alas Purwo. Pantai ini memanjang dengan kontur pasir putih kecoklatan yang berupa bulir bulat, seperti merica.

Located only  15 minutes drive from the Plengkung beach, Parang Ireng Beach is one of my favorite in the Alas Purwo National Park. This beach extends making white brownish line of the coast. The sands here shaped like pepper grains, take some sands and feel it in your hands, you'll instantly feel the difference.

Namun pesona Parang Ireng bukan hanya pada pasir merica. Pantai yang sepi ini bagaikan pantai pribadi, tanpa banyak turis maka binatang liar banyak berdatangan ke pantai ini. Saya melihat banyak jejak kaki rusa dan kera yang datang ke tepian dimana air tawar mengalir menuju laut.

But the charm of Parang Ireng beach is not only on these sands. No crowds and feels like deserted, being in this place makes you feels like in the private beach. Without a  lot of tourist, so many wild animals coming into this beach. I saw a lot of animal footprints from deers to monkeys which came into the shore where the fresh water flows into the sea.

Tolehkan pandangan ke kanan saat memasuki area Pantai Parang Ireng. Struktur batuan hitam bagaikan lava hitam yang membeku menghiasi pesisir, kontras dengan pasir pantai, lengkap dengan lumut hijau yang tumbuh di bebatuan, bagaikan di bagian dunia lain. Simply beautiful..

See to your right side when entering the beach. Black structures looking like a freezing black lava rocks decorate the coastal area, contrast with the white sands. Green moss also growing on top of some black rocks, making a different view which feels like you're in the other parts of the world. Simply beautiful.

Friends with Stingray at Ray Bay

Sebagian orang mengenal stingray atau ikan pari sebagai pembunuh Steve Irwin, sang penakluk binatang binatang liar dan berbahaya yang ironisnya meninggal akibat kecelakaan disaat ia berupaya memegang ikan pari. 

Most people know stingray as animal which killed Steve Irwin , the wildlife expert who ironically died from an accident when he attempted to hold a stingray.

Ikan pari sebenarnya adalah binatang yang tidak agresif. Mereka hanya menyerang untuk membela diri di saat merasa terancam. Mesti menyakitkan, racun semacam duri yang muncul di bagian ekor stingray tidak menyebabkan kematian, kecuali bagian yang terkena adalah dada atau bagian abdomen seperti yang terjadi pada Steve Irwin

Stingray is actually a non-aggressive animals which only attack in self-defense when threatened. The attack of a stingray is painful, the poison spines that appears at the stingray's tail mostly do not cause death, except when the affected area is part of the chest or abdomen as happened to Steve Irwin

Di saat diving melihat stingray selalu menarik, meski hanya dapat memperhatikan tanpa boleh memegang. Saat bermain di pesisir pantai pun ada beberapa lokasi yang dihindari karena seringkali ada stingray bersembunyi di pasir, menginjak binatang ini dapat menyebabkan mereka kaget dan mengeluarkan "duri" tersembunyi di ekor mereka.

Seeing these creatures during diving is always interesting, but I can only see and not touching them at all. Also when you enjoy your time at the beach, there are some locations which are often avoided since a lot of stingray hide in the sand, stomping these animals can make them shocked and inject their "thorn" which hidden in their tails.

Yes, you can feed them :)

Namun di Marine Life Park, Sentosa di Singapura ada area dimana anda dapat berinteraksi dengan pari laut tanpa perlu takut terkena sengat mereka. Ray Bay adalah semacam kolam besar di Adventure Cove Waterpark dimana ada 65 ikan pari dari 10 spesies yang berbeda yang dapat anda sentuh dan bahkan dapat diberi makan langsung dari tangan anda.

 
But at the Marine Life Park , Sentosa in Singapore there are areas where you can interact with stingrays without fear of being stung by them. Ray Bay is a place at Adventure Cove Waterpark with large pond filled with 65 rays of 10 different species that you can touch and also you can feed them directly from your hand.

Saya memasuki kolam dengan kedalaman sekitar 75 sentimeter sambil melihat ikan pari berkeliaran. Mulai dari blue spotted ray, coachwhip ray, cownose ray hingga spotted eagle ray berkeliaran di dekat kaki saya tanpa takut. "Disini racun mereka sudah dibuang karena mereka tidak perlu perlindungan dari predator asli, jadi berinteraksi dengan ikan pari disini sangat aman," ujar salah satu Ray Bay officer yang menemani kami.

 
I entered the pool with a depth of about 75 centimeters while watching stingrays milling around my feet. From blue spotted ray, coachwhip ray, cownose ray and spotted eagle ray wandering up near us without fear. "Here they don't need protection from their native predators so we took the sting from their body and it's completely safe to interact with them," said one Ray Bay officer who accompany us.

Selain aman rupanya ikan pari yang ada disini sangat bersemangat saat kami masuk ke dalam kolam. Bagi mereka manusia adalah pemberi makanan enak menu makan mereka yaitu potongan ikan dan cumi cumi. Ikan pari ini langsung mengambil potongan ikan dari tangan dan anda akan merasakan halusnya tubuh mereka, bahkan ada ikan pari berwarna hitam yang bagian tubuhnya sangat halus seperti beludru.

 
Beside its completely safe to step in the pond, the stingray here are even more excited than me when we get into the water. For them human are those giving their tasty food like fish and squids. These rays immediately took the food from our hands and you'll feel how smooth their skins are. Even the black ray have skin which felt like velvet when you touch them.

The cownose ray

Salah satu ikan pari yang paling bersemangat adalah cownose ray yang beberapa kali langsung mendatangi kami sambil membuka mulutnya lebar lebar minta disuapi makanan, super cute!

One of the most eagerly stingray is cownose ray which came straight at us a few times and opened their mouth wide asking for food, super cute!

Prosedur memberi makanan di Ray Bay pun tidak rumit, anda hanya perlu memakai sarung tangan dan booties agar tidak melukai tubuh stingray, ingat kuku jari kita bisa saja tajam dan melukai mereka. Selain itu pada saat masuk ke kolam yang beralaskan pasir kita perlu sedikit menggerak gerakkan kaki di tempat agar ikan pari ini dapat mengetahui keberadaan kita dan tidak terinjak. Cukup mengingat dua hal ini dan anda dapat menikmati interaksi langsung dengan ikan pari. Favorit saya adalah spotted eagle ray yang tampak seperti burung sedang terbang di air, serta cownose ray yang sangat jinak.

  

The procedures of stingray feeding in Ray Bay isn't complicated at all, you just need to wear gloves and booties so you won't hurt the stingray, remember our fingernails could be sharp and hurt them. Also when you dip into the pond we need to shuffle our feet a bit so that the stingray will know we are coming so we won't step on them. Just remember these two things and you can enjoy interacting with these animals. My favorite is the spotted eagle ray which looked like birds flying underwater, also the cownose ray which is very "friendly"

Satu lagi, di kolam Ray Bay ini rupanya ada ikan pari yang sedang hamil! Saya bertanya kepada petugas kenapa ada bagian yang dipisahkan jaring, ternyata di dalamnya ada ikan pari berukuran kecil yang lahir di kolam ini, serta satu ikan pari yang sedang hamil. Sepertinya beberapa bulan ke depan kolam ini akan semakin ramai dengan penghuni baru.. :)

 
One more, apparently one ray in Ray Bay pond is pregnant! I asked the officer why there are parts that are separated by nets, it turned out they separate the pregnant ray from the other rays. Looks like in the next few months there will be new residents in Ray Bay :)

How To Make Fun Photos at Kakaban Lake

Saya ingat beberapa tahun yang lalu teman saya yang baru pulang dari Derawan memperlihatkan foto ia berada di tengah tengah danau penuh ubur ubur. Danau di Kakaban adalah tempat dimana anda dapat bercengkerama dengan binatang ini tanpa takut tersengat karena ubur ubur di Kakaban telah berevolusi menjadi jenis yang tidak menyengat. 

I remember a few years ago a friend of mine who had just returned from Derawan showed some photos of him in the middle of jellyfish in Kakaban. Kakaban lake is a place where you can mingle with these animals without being afraid of getting some scars because of the sting as the jellyfish in Kakaban have evolved into a "friendly" species.
 

 

Sejak melihat foto teman saya itu, Kakaban adalah salah satu destinasi impian saya dan saat mengunjungi Derawan bulan Agustus 2013, mimpi saya terwujud dan saya bisa merasa seperti Spongebob yang bermain bersama ubur ubur.

Since I  saw those photos, Kakaban is one of my dream destinations and when I visited Derawan on August 2013, my dream came true and I could feel like Spongebob playing with jellyfish.

Rupanya Tuhan terlalu baik dan hanya selisih dua bulan saya kembali ada di Kakaban, kembali melihat ubur ubur lucu ini. Selain bermain main dengan ubur ubur unik yang tidak menyengat ini, saya juga senang berfoto foto dengan mereka, karena kapan lagi anda bisa berinteraksi begitu dekat dengan ubur ubur? :)

Apparently God being too kind. Two months after I visited Kakaban again. Seeing this cute jellyfishes again. Beside playing with these unique jellyfish, I also get a lot of fun photos with the jellyfish, since where else would you get to interact so close with the jellyfish ? :)

So here's some tips for fun photos with the jellies!

Jellyfish are everywhere, super fun!

• Coba jangan menggunakan masker, muka akan terlihat jelas (masker berwarna gelap cenderung menutupi sebagian besar muka kita) dan foto akan jauh lebih menyenangkan.
• Try not using a google or mask, the face will be more visible (dark colored mask tends to cover most of our face), the photos will be much more fun

• Untuk yang belum terbiasa membuka mata di air, coba dengan duduk di tangga dermaga, celupkan muka ke dalam air sambil menutup mata dan buka saat di dalam, tidak perih kok :)
• For those not used to open eyes underwater, try to sit on the steps of the pier, dip down into the water while closing your eyes, when inside the water try open your eyes. Don't worry it's not painfull at all :) 

Direct them gently

• Setelah terbiasa membuka mata cari ubur ubur yang ukurannya cukup besar, ambil dengan cara diarahkan pelan pelan, jangan ditarik dengan kasar. Coba dengan dua tangan membentuk mangkuk untuk mengarahkan ubur ubur ini ke dekat anda.
• After you get used open your eyes underwater, look for the jellyfish which large enough. Take them gently, don't pull the jellyfish roughly. Try it with two hands forming a bowl to direct the jellyfish close to you .
• Agar badan berada di dalam air, buang napas sehingga badan otomatis turun dan foto jauh lebih seru. Jika sulit untuk menenggelamkan diri, berpegangan di tangga dermaga sambil menurunkan badan ke air.
• In order to get your body down in the water try exhaling so the body will automatically descend. If it's hard to drown, hold the stairs in the dock while lowering your body into the water 
• Jika tidak bisa berenang, gunakan pelampung tapi coba tanpa masker.
• If you can't swim , use a life vest but try without the mask.

• Saat berada di dalam air mulut tidak perlu dipaksa menutup karena akan terlihat menahan napas, mulut terbuka pun jika kita tidak menghirup maka air tidak akan tertelan.
• Once inside the water, you don't have to forced your mouth to close tight because it will make your expression shows that you're holding breath. Even when mouth open, if we don't inhale, you won't swallow the water.

• Jangan terlalu banyak menggerakkan kaki jika mengambil foto di area dekat dermaga karena akan menyebabkan partikel lumpur di bawah terangkat ke atas dan membuat air danau keruh.
• Do not move your legs too much when taking photos in the area near the dock because it will lift up the mud particles below and make the it became turbid.
•  Jangan lupa bawa kamera tahan air, pilihannya beragam, mulai dari kamera yang dapat dibawa ke dalam air tanpa housing, kamera dengan housing, Go Pro, atau bahkan smartphone dengan case plastik tahan air yang banyak dijual.
• Do not forget to bring a waterproof camera, there are a lot of choices, ranging from cameras that can be brought into the water without housing, camera with housing, Go Pro, or even a smartphone with waterproof plastic case.

Sunset at G-Land

Sunset selalu jadi momen yang wajib ditunggu di tempat baru, gurat warna di setiap lokasi di waktu yang berbeda selalu unik dan menarik untuk dinikmati.

Sunset is always a moment we gotta see in each new place. Lines of colors created in the sky is always different and unique, interesting to watch and simply enjoy.

So enjoy this Sunset just behind Joyo's Surf Camp in G-Land.
